Many early childhood educators set up a quiet, cozy space where a child can take a break when the room gets loud or emotions run high. A teepee tent works well for this “calm-down corner”: it feels enclosed and safe, yet staff can still see inside.
Why a teepee works for a calm-down corner
- Clear boundary: children know that inside the tent is a quiet space.
- Soft and cozy: the round 120 cm fluffy mat gives a comfortable place to sit.
- Visible: the open door and window let educators keep an eye on the child.
- Flexible: it becomes a reading nook, a small-group story space or a dramatic-play prop.
Setting up the corner
- Choose a low-traffic corner away from doors, heaters and the block area.
- Inside: the mat, one or two cushions, a few picture books in the side pockets, and simple calming tools (a feelings chart, a soft toy, a sand timer).
- Keep it uncluttered – fewer items make it calmer.
- Our tent is 120 × 120 × 160 cm, so 1–2 children fit comfortably for quiet time (2–3 for play).
Simple classroom guidelines
- The calm corner is a choice, not a punishment.
- One or two children at a time.
- Quiet voices inside; toys stay gentle.
- When a child is ready, they return to the group.
Safety in childcare settings
The tent is lab-tested for Canada (flammability, lead, phthalates) and recommended for ages 3–8. In a group setting, we suggest not using the fairy lights, or keeping the battery pack and cord out of reach, and always following your centre’s own safety and licensing requirements.
